What I accomplished

-figured out I can do cultural misinterpretations without processing; as a result decided to curb this direction

-reworked DH using balloons

-purchased water balloons

-observed their transformation under 5 different lenses

-observed red was most striking

-reworked processing code to limit colors to those of balloons

-reworked coloring scheme to better hide image

-tested balloon spacing

-testing deflation rate

-testing balloon “fillers” and puncture effect

Problems/Unexpected Discoveries

-would like to puncture balloons to reveal third layer, but not sure if time for implementation

-no more thinking, plug and chug

Goal for next week

-DH carnival cutout with red lenses integrated

1.illustrate cutout; take into account tape line

2.two large format print

3.spray mount cutout to ply and cut out

4.create removable base

5.fit-up lenses

6.prime

7.cut out second print along “tape lines”

8.apply “stencil” with tape to ply

9.spray

10.repeat 7 & 8 until complete

11.clear coat

12.assemble base, cutout and lenses

-balloon board

1.frame

2.skin with peg board

3.skin with canvas

4.tape peg back exposing only through holes

5.puncture canvas

6.inflate balloons

7.attach balloons according to processing image

What I accomplished

-read up on colorimetry and CIE color specification system

-obtained gel sample sheet from backstage hardware

-sidetracked with Damien Hirst article…

-got overlay program to work with two line images and rows of dots

-coloring seems too obvious

-trying to add a larger third image to hide two line images

-might just be a matter of how big piece is and how far back one is able to stand

-decided on different delivery method for cultural misconceptions

-triangular kiosk (like in malls)

-peep holes on each side

-dining scene; Lichtensein’s “house,” carnival cutouts

-possible to create multiple levels of different scenes; peering into a high rise building

Problems/Unexpected Discoveries

-gel sample sheets provide spectral energy distribution curves

-new direction on cultural misconceptions requires image mapping; need to find and learn another library…

-RGB Jungle

Goal for next week

-find and implement image mapping library

-mockup of kiosk

-determine dh direction and mockup

What I accomplished

-decided on cultural guide direction

-researched online and talked to people about cultural misinterpretations

-created 2/3 illustrations for a Japanese misinterpretation in illustrator

-began playing with geomerative library

-successfully loaded svg and polygonized it

-successfully colored two basic shapes and their overlaps

Problems/Unexpected Discoveries

-intersect() is iffy around the edges of shapes

-not sure if intersect() is going to work with polygonize()

Goal for next week

-illustrate 2 other misinterpretations (6 images total)

-continue/finish work on overlay program

-consider presentation scenario (installation/poster vs book/pamphlet) and research outsourcing

High Level Description

Users assume the mindset of a person/organization by viewing a two dimensional image/text through a filtered lens.  The lenses facilitate the opportunity for two-four people to look at the same image and see different things.  The goal to is to draw attention to the discrepancies in viewpoints that originate from a common origin.

Possible Direction

1.Travel Guide

-create an online sight with the following instructions:

Think of a situation in which visitors misinterpret an object, behavior, word or phrase.  Create a black and white image/text that illustrates the misinterpreted item, the visitors interpretation, and your interpretation.

-provide area for the upload of these three images and the input of participants origin

-distribute to people from various locations

-create program takes these three items and overlays them to allow for viewing of one image in three ways based on filters

-create installation illustrating location, common object/differing perspectives, and people involved

or

-after enough data is collected print “travel book” and incorporate lenses

2.The Gospel according to  (organization name)

-research various factions’ interpretation of common passages

-compile data

-create program that takes various interpretations and overlays them with common passages

-create a poster illustrating these differences and post; provide factional viewing areas that “translates” the text

or

-create a pamphlet that illustrates these differences utilizing lenses and distribute

Timeline

11/5-11/12

-get feedback on directions and decide

-create basic program using geomerative library that takes two elementary shapes and overlays them to create a defined third shape

11/12-11/19

-if travel book: work on creation of website, explore possible distribution methods

-if gospel: research christian factions and compile data

-finish work on overlay program

-consider presentation scenario (installation/poster vs book/pamphlet) and research outsourcing

11/19-11/26

-if travel book: post website, bug friends

-if gospel: input data to program

-outsource

11/26-12/3

-assembly
