Each week, besides regular assignments, 1-2 students will give a short presentation of an inspiring art piece or artist that involves technology relevant to the class. The piece will be discussed, analyzed and critiqued. Rather than giving us a biographical or portfolio overview, we are more interested in your own insight and critique of the work. How does the artist/piece utilize technology/programming? Which parts are successful, which are not? What is unique about what this artist is doing — in the context of art/design; in the context of media art; in the context of technology? Where could they take it further? Feel free to include video clips, code demos, readings sent to the class beforehand, etc. Interactive discussions are more engaging than straight up lectures.
This list from Form+Code is a great place to start. Also check out the blog posts from the first and second classes.
Alternatively, you could also present one of the following:
(1) Processing library demo – give us an overview of the some of the audio, video, etc libraries you’ve been playing with. Show us how it works, some examples of others using it.
(2) Interesting reading – have us read part of a relevant book, essay, article, magazine that you like, lead a discussion about it’s relation to this class.
(3) Film – find a cool film or set of video clips for us to watch, there are some nice documentaries out there.
(4) Past life – take us deeper into the world you are coming from or were working in before you got to RISD, show us the connection between your area of expertise and the space we’re exploring in class.
(5) Some other good idea you have that you run by me.
The idea is for us to share different angles and perspectives on art/design + programming, beyond making processing sketches. It may take a little time to plan but I’m hoping you can find something you’d really enjoy presenting to the class.
Sign up by commenting below with your name, week, and chosen artist or project, you’ll be officially added to the schedule as I see your comment posts.
